Riot Platforms, a Bitcoin mining company headquartered in Colorado, managed to significantly narrow its net loss for the second quarter, reporting a reduction to $27.7 million. This positive outcome was driven by the company’s intensified Bitcoin production efforts and its attainment of an all-time high hash rate capacity.
In its financial report released on August 9th, the cryptocurrency miner disclosed a total revenue of $76.7 million, marking a 5.2% increase compared to the second quarter of 2022. This growth was primarily propelled by a remarkable 27% year-on-year surge in Bitcoin production. However, this gain was somewhat mitigated by a decline in Bitcoin prices during the same period, as indicated by the BTC ticker at $29,462.
Of the total revenue generated, mining activities contributed a significant portion, with mining revenue reaching $49.7 million, constituting 64.7% of the firm’s quarterly revenue. In addition, the company secured an extra $13.5 million through power curtailment credits.
Comparatively, the net loss incurred during Q2 exhibited a substantial reduction from the corresponding period in the previous year, which had amounted to a staggering $353.5 million. Furthermore, this Q2 net loss was nearly halved in comparison to the figures reported in the first quarter of 2023.
The company’s production output for the quarter amounted to 1,775 Bitcoin, and its average cost for mining a Bitcoin (BTC) during Q2 was $8,389, surpassing the average price achieved in Q1.
Notably, Riot Platforms achieved an impressive milestone by reaching a record hash rate capacity of 10.7 exahashes per second. The company anticipates this capacity to further escalate to 20.1 EH/s by the second quarter of 2024 and eventually reach an even higher 35.4 EH/s by 2025. These projections are based on the recent acquisition of 33,280 mining rigs in late June. The 35.4 EH/s estimate is contingent upon Riot’s exercise of its right to acquire an additional 66,560 miners at the same price and terms in the near future.
Despite a 4.42% decline in Riot’s share price earlier in the day, the release of the company’s financial results led to an additional 0.86% reduction in after-hours trading.

Stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a steady value by pegging it to a stable underlying asset, have been in existence for some time. However, they have struggled to establish a strong presence within mainstream consumer payment systems. Instead, stablecoins have predominantly found utility as trading instruments for other cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ether. Notably, Tether holds the title of the world’s largest stablecoin, closely followed by USD Coin, which is issued by the crypto provider Circle.
Previous attempts by major mainstream companies to introduce stablecoins faced staunch opposition from financial regulators and policymakers. For instance, Meta (formerly known as Facebook) encountered regulatory concerns that prevented the launch of its stablecoin, Libra, in 2019 due to potential disruptions to global financial stability.
In response to the evolving landscape, several major economies, including the United Kingdom and the European Union, have laid out regulatory frameworks to govern stablecoins. The EU’s regulations are set to take effect in June 2024.
Commenting on the matter, Ian Katz, Managing Director of Capital Alpha Partners, noted, “PayPal isn’t as polarizing as Facebook, but its prominent name will certainly draw attention from Capitol Hill, as well as from the Federal Reserve and Securities and Exchange Commission.”
Last month, the U.S. House Financial Services Committee advanced a bill aimed at establishing a federal regulatory framework for stablecoins. This legislation will focus on outlining rules for the registration and approval processes for entities issuing stablecoins.
Representative Patrick McHenry, the Republican chair of the committee, highlighted the significance of PayPal’s announcement, suggesting that stablecoins hold potential as a foundational element of the modern payment system in the 21st century. He emphasized that Congress is actively progressing in a bipartisan manner to ensure the United States maintains a leading role in shaping the financial landscape of the future.
PayPal’s stablecoin, known as PayPal USD, is backed by deposits of U.S. dollars and short-term U.S. Treasuries. The issuance of the stablecoin will be overseen by Paxos Trust Co. Over time, it will be gradually accessible to PayPal customers in the U.S.
This unique token holds the capability to be redeemed for U.S. dollars at any point, while also serving as a medium for purchasing and selling other cryptocurrencies available on PayPal’s platform, including bitcoin.
In an enthusiastic statement, Paxos shared, “PYUSD marks a significant milestone, representing the evolution of U.S. dollars on the blockchain. This achievement is not only a defining moment for Paxos and PayPal but also a transformative step for the entire financial sector.” Notably, Visa (V.N) also expressed its intention in 2021 to permit the use of cryptocurrency for settling transactions on its payment network.

These dapps are envisioned to reach a global audience of one billion individuals. It’s worth noting that Coinbase executed a direct listing of its shares on the Nasdaq exchange in April 2021.
Heading the Base blockchain initiative is Jesse Pollak, Coinbase’s Head of Protocols. In a recent interview, Pollak revealed that approximately 100 dapps are already operational or poised for deployment on the newly established network.
Pollak stated, “Traditionally, the scope of possibilities with cryptocurrencies has been rather confined, often limited to speculation. For Coinbase, the crypto realm, and the strides we are making, to truly create the desired impact, we must transition from being driven by speculation to being seamlessly integrated into every facet of an individual’s daily routine.”
In conjunction with the formal launch of Base, Coinbase has unveiled its plans for an engaging “Onchain Summer” campaign in collaboration with corporate partners, including none other than Coca-Cola (KO). This initiative aims to showcase the multifaceted capabilities of the new project to a wider audience.
